Working principle

 
A foam fire extinguisher puts out fires by covering the flames with a thick blanket of foam. In turn, this deprives the fire of air supply, thus undermining its capacity to release flammable vapors. When directed towards flammable liquids, the foam allows the liquid to drain from it before forming an aqueous film. Foam Extinguisher are normally used for Fire Class A and Fire Class B.

How to use:

 
1.Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. The pin releases a locking mechanism and will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.
2.Squeeze the lever slowly. This will release the extinguishing agent in extinguisher. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.
3.Where to aim the fire extinguisher nozzle:
• Flammable liquids: Aim the hose at a vertical surface near the fire, do not spray directly at the fire as this could cause the burning liquid to splash and the fire to spread to surrounding areas. Foam extinguishers build up of foam on the surface of the burning liquid, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire and cooling the hot liquid.
• Electrical fires: If your foam extinguisher is tested to 35000 Volt (35kV) you can use the extinguishers on live electrical fires. However, keep a safety distance of 1m.
• Solid combustibles: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, moving across the area of the fire
4.Sweep from side to side. Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher back and forth until the fire is completely out. Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance, several feet away, and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish.
5.Ensure all of the fire has been extinguished; the foam creates a blanket over the fire and helps to prevent re-ignition.
6.Be sure to have read the instructions on your fire extinguisher.

Application :

 
Foam fire extinguishers can be used on Class A and B fires. They are most suited to extinguishing liquid fires such as petrol or diesel and are more versatile than water jet extinguishers because they can also be used on solids such as wood and paper.
